This script is based on the Theodore Dreiser story
set in early 20th Century Chicago. An innocent girl
is seduced by the playboy son of a local coal baron.
When the boy attempts to abandon his pregnant conquest, she shoots and kills him. After a
sensationalist trial, the girl is acquitted and
lives with a rich woman sympathetic to the girl's
plight. After the birth of her son, the girl returns to her paint-store owning father's house.
She later drowns herself in the public park where she and her lover used to meet.
