At 49 years old Rachel feels as though her life has lost meaning. Over half of her life revolved around her children, but now they're grown with lives of their own that has very little to do with her. In a dream Rachel's told that in 13 months she will give birth to a son, and WITH HIS FIRST BREATH all death will end. There will be no more death, no more birth for every warm-blooded creature on earth.

It's a time of miracles, a time of rejoicing, yet it's also a time for mourning the end of a way of life. No more babies, no more hope to one day see a loved one who has passed away before ‘the change’ occurred, people who were terminally ill before ‘the change’ will stay terminally but with thoughts of an eternity of suffering facing them. The child is Azrael, the angel of death born into the world to understand why mankind hates and fears him so much. He doesn't know who he is and lives a normal happy life for 17 years in ignorant bliss. Unbeknownst to the boy, his older brother Tim is the Protector, and he's searched the world seeking the child who's birth ended death to protect him from people like the self proclaimed Reverend Mosea who is, with his followers, also trying to find the identity of the Ancient One, for whomever controls the child controls death. When Azrael accidentally kills one of Mosea’s followers he’s terrified, people don’t die, they can’t die. With the aid of his two best friends he hides the body in the forest behind the house and hopes that will be the end of his problem. When Tim comes home for a visit and finds out that his twin sister is pregnant he takes a closer look at his little brother and realizes the child he’s been searching the world for has been hidden from him in plain sight all these long and lonely years. Mosea, at the same time, realizes something is wrong when the man he sent to check out Azrael doesn’t report in. He realizes that not only has he finally found the Protector, but he’s also found Ancient One. Mosea’s men kidnap the wrong boy, and Azrael and Tim along with their parents and a few friends take off to rescue the boy. But Mosea is one step ahead of them and ends up capturing them all. In the end the decision to let mankind remain demigods and live forever, or return them to mere mortals lies in the hands of Rachel and her beautiful loving son, Azrael.
